The Role of an Intercessor
An intercessor leads the congregation in prayer, giving voice to the needs of the Church, the world, our local community, and those in need. This is a quiet and important ministry of service.
Intercessors do not preach or explain. Instead, they help the congregation to pray with clarity, reverence, and compassion, reflecting the themes of the day and the season of the Church year.
The Shape of the Prayers
Intercessions at St Christopher’s usually follow this pattern:
- Opening Invitation
A brief sentence that gathers the congregation in prayer and connects with the day’s readings or season. - The Church
Prayers for the worldwide Church, our diocese, our parish, clergy, and ministries. - The World
Prayers for peace, justice, and the leaders of nations. - The Local Community
Prayers for the North Shore, local organisations, and outreach ministries. - Those in Need
Prayers for the sick, the lonely, and those facing hardship. Names may be included where appropriate. - The Departed
Remembering those who have died and those who mourn. - Closing Prayer
A short prayer gathering all our petitions.
Our Response
A simple response helps everyone take part:
Leader: Lord, in your mercy
All: Hear our prayer
(Seasonal alternatives may sometimes be used.)
Guidelines for Intercessors
- Keep prayers brief (around 3–5 minutes)
- Use simple and inclusive language
- Avoid preaching or giving explanations
- Leave a short pause after each petition
- Speak clearly and calmly
- Check names and current concerns beforehand
- Reflect the Church season (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost)
A Shared Ministry
Intercessions are the prayers of the whole congregation. The intercessor’s role is to gently lead these prayers, helping all present to bring their concerns and thanksgivings before God.
